As a single girl who is in her mid twenties, I dream about my future marriage. The beautifully scripted love story God will weave between me, and my future husband. But along with these dreams, also comes the realisation that I must make the most of my time now; to live out my single years well, and allow God to prepare me for my future marriage.
Because of this, I’m currently reading many christian books to learn more about God’s view of marriage. My latest read, “Marriage God’s Way” , is chock full of wisdom and practical advice which I want to share with you. It is written by pastor, blogger, father, and most of all, husband, Scott La Pierre.
It’s not that the other books I’ve read haven’t been, but the depth in which this book dives into, is unlike any other. Instead of mentioning scripture here and there, Scott unpacks countless passages of scripture, helping you understand them, then apply to your life. That’s what I love about this book. Because it’s so biblically grounded, I knew I could trust every thing I was reading, as I learnt about …
- Scripture’s commands for husbands and wives
- Godly love and how to show it
- Submission and headship
- Biblical intimacy
- How to build your marriage on an indestructible foundation
I didn’t just receive practical advice from a Godly husband (which is helpfully included as well), but instead I got unchanging and timeless truth from the one who created marriage Himself, God. (Who else’s advice do you need?)
God created marriage. He knows how it works best, and He not only wants to let us in on it, but also wants to equip us to live it out. Prior to reading “Marriage God’s way” I thought I’d read all the Bible had to say about marriage, but I was wrong. Here are 3 simple, but revolutionary truths I learnt from this book. I hope they change your view on marriage, just like they did for me!
How to do Marriage, God’s Way
1. We must Obey the Bible instead of the World:
The world is currently trying to redefine what marriage looks like, along with the roles of husbands and wives. If we want to have marriages which function as God designed them to, we must forsake the “wisdom” of the world and listen to His. It’s definitely not always easy, but we must believe that God always knows what’s best.
2. We must view Marriage as God intended:
This struck me as soon as I read the first page,
“… because the marriage relationship is a picture of Christ and His relationship to the Church, it is one of the greatest evangelistic tools believers have. Godly marriages have the potential to reveal Christ to an unbelieving world”.
I had never thought of it like that before. Instead of being ineffective and burdensome, marriage is actually a powerful tool created by God, to show God, to the world.
How does this change the way you think about/approach marriage?
3. We must have a Strong Relationship with God in order to have a Strong Marriage:
This truth isn’t usually talked about today, but it’s one of the reasons why divorce rates are so high today. God must be the centre foundation of our marriages in order for them to flourish and bloom.
How will we be able to stand against the pressures of life if God
isn’t the one to give us what we need in the midst of it?
God’s plan for marriage is really remarkable. If you want a greater taste of what your heavenly romance can look like, then I suggest reading “Marriage God’s Way”. It’s great for providing you with rich biblical truth and practical applications, whether single or married.
Let’s allow God to reshape our view of marriage,
into His original vision and design.
Done God’s way, it can truly be a picture of heaven on earth.
